"My Wordz Make You Think" Photo Recap

We attended the "Wordz Make You Think" Poetry Slam yesterday. There is just too much to say on what we experienced. The things we heard... An amazing array of emotion and beauty synchronized in the most delectable form of the poetry that I've heard as of late. Young people, this is where you should be. This is what you should be hearing. Put away your SOULDJAH BOYs & LITTLE WAYNEs... and listen to the amazing melodies of your peers as they school us on life, as they see it.

The girl in this video you will recognize in the pictures below. Her name is Maxis and she is the coach for the Miami team, as well as a poet herself. The other poet, Diego, I was hoping to see at the event but he was not there. This poem in the video below entitled "Father"... it does too many things to me. Hear for yourself.

& that's only a minuscule portion of the eargasm we experienced yesterday. Here is a Photo Recap of the amazing competition.

Nike Back Your Block

RANDUMBmiami has always been about being involved in the community.

I got word from our boy Alex Aka. The Mayor from Above Average about this program from Nike called "Back Your Block".

Photobucket

Having to do with sports and our community of course it caught our immediate interest, so spreading the word is imminent.

Nike is investing up to $650,000 in grants across the nation to unlock the potential of young people through the power of sports.

Just Tell NIKE how your organization is using sports as a tool to change your community for a shot at winning a Back Your Block grant to help take your work to the next level. The deadline for applications is August 24, 2009.

Our boy Alex coaches the W.E.B. youth basketball team here in Miami and they are in the drawing, and we want to make sure they come away with the prize just like they've thrived and come away with chip after chip.

So make sure to go and vote for them, its pretty simple just input your email address then verify it and that counts as your vote!

Who ever wins the contest I'm sure will make great use of the money and continue making a huge impact in the community through sports.

My Wordz Make You Think

I'm a big spoken word buff. I wouldn't consider myself knowledgeable in past or even present "known" poets but I know that there isn't another medium that captivates & shakes me like spoken word. It's hard finding a spot in Miami that hosts regular nights of spoken word. Usually, what we end up with is a couple of nights at a University or some off the wall cafe. So, I end up at home with my "Def Poetry Jam" DVDs and roaming around YouTube.

A couple months back, I heard about the International Youth Poetry Slam Festival "Brave New Voices" via an email from HBO, which allowed me to watch the first episode online. It spotlighted different groups of young Poets from different areas in the US as they prepared to compete in the Brave New Voices competition and the final teams that were selected were shown at the end of the episode.

I was blown away by the talent of the kids & teens I saw featured. Their unparalleled passion and heartfelt deliveries had me glued. I was genuinely sad when the episode was over, as I wanted to find out more about the kids. One of the groups that was selected was a group from South Florida: Write Side Poets. While I was looking them up online, I noticed that they will be competing in the 3rd Annual Florida Youth Poetry Slam "My Wordz Make You Think" being held this Saturday, July 11th at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

The Write Side Poets will be competing against the Jacksonville (Shattered Thought),
Tampa (Heard'em Say), Orlando (Diverse Elements) and Miami (Tigertail WordSpeaks) teams. I'm sure the wordplay is going to be ridiculous & I absolutely CAN NOT WAIT. Tickets are $10 in advance $15 at the door. For advance tickets log onto https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/69001 or call 954-628-2243.

The show starts at 7pm. Music will be provided by D.J. Sista Soul & PBS South Florida will be covering the event, as will we! See you there!
